New grads offered $200k, but there's a catch
News that IT recruiters in Australia are offering up to A$200,000 for grad positions will come as something of a shock to employers on this side of the ditch but are a sign of things to come once borders do finally open up.
As vaccinations show the light at the end of the COVID tunnel, recruitment and talent retention are likely to play major roles in any growth plans for the next couple of years, and with these kinds of offers already emerging ("jobs come with other benefits, including a flat management structure, a casual dress code, "chef-cooked" breakfasts and lunches, and weekly massages for all employees"), local recruitment will need to adopt a new strategy if the sector is to cope.
Local tech company Datacom recently announced it was working with non-traditional approaches to try to fill its more-than 200 vacant roles around New Zealand, including outside the tertiary training environment (DISCLAIMER: the editor also works for Datacom), but overall demand for IT professionals continues to outstrip graduates and those entering the industry.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) rates "ICT architects and administrators" as being in high demand, with high employment prospects and high levels of remuneration.
Recruitment first Absolute IT's report on the IT sector suggests that more than one third of respondents (35%) changed roles last year and that 90% are considering a move this year. And the reason for moving? Simple: money.
"[W]hilst career development is the top reason for considering a new role, the main reason for accepting a job offer was an increase in remuneration. The preference for career development above all else aligns with the nature of technology; constant evolution which drives users and adopters to evolve along with it."
It would seem 2021 is shaping up to be a good time to be an IT employee and a difficult time for employers.
