Here's a quick weekly update from ITP CEO Paul Matthews.

We're excited to be kicking off the Call for Presenters for ITx Rutherford next week, the retreat-style ITx spin-off conference being held in October this year. It's going to be awesome!

Next week also sees the first of the Rutherford Lecture Series on Quantum Computing by Auckland University in association with IT Professionals NZ. If you're not in Auckland or can't get along, check out the live-stream.

Plus we welcome two new people to our Operations Team to fill two new roles due to expanding operations and activities, and an opportunity to give back through the Community Living Trust.

 

ITx Rutherford

ITx Rutherford Call for Papers starts next week 

As you'll be aware, ITx Rutherford is coming up in October. We're excited to be kicking off the Call for Papers/Presenters next week!

The main ITx conference is the largest independent national tech conference in NZ, run every second year in one of the main centres (usually Wellington at the TSB Arena and Shed 6 complex). With almost 1000 delegates and 12 conferences in one, ITx is huge.

ITx Rutherford is a more intimate version of ITx, limited to 350 people and held in a retreat-style format in Nelson this year. The conference runs from 9th-11th October 2019.

ITx Rutherford focuses on Innovation, Technology and Education and is a great platform for everything that sits in this broad area. If you're interested in talking at ITx, look out for the Call for Presenters kicking off next week.

Quantum Computing - Livestream of open lectures

The Gibbons Lecture Series kicks off next week, a joint collaboration between the University of Auckland's Computer Science department and IT Professionals NZ.

This year the series is focused on Quantum Computing, one of Gartner's top tech trends for 2019. Quantum Computing refers to massive parallel systems and in usual "back to the future" style, is one of the next iterations of tech development.

We're excited to say that all of the lectures will be live-streamed this year, so you can watch from anywhere. However if you're in Auckland, nothing beats being there in person.

The four lectures are:

Quantum computing: What it is, and how we do it

Weds 8th May, 6:30pm-8pm

Dr Michael Dinneen will give an explanation (for novices) of what quantum computing is, and compare it to traditional digital/classical computing.

Cryptography after quantum computers

Weds 15th May, 6:30pm-8pm

In this talk, Professor Steven Galbraith will briefly survey modern cryptography and indicate which current systems are potentially vulnerable to quantum computers.

Searching for the quantum frontier

Weds 22nd May, 6:30pm-8pm

In this talk Professor Bremner will discuss how quantum advantage emerges from the subtle characteristics of problems where quantum interference can best be utilised, and why this makes building and developing applications for quantum computers such a difficult task.

ITP team growing 

We're really excited to welcome two new staff to the ITP operations team as we continue to grow our operations and activities.

Due to increased demand for Chartered IT Professional and Certified Technologist certifications as well as an expansion in our qualifications assessment for immigration area, we've created a new full-time Senior Assessor role in the team. This role was advertised over the last couple of weeks and we're very happy to have appointed Tracey Waterman to the role.

With ITx Rutherford coming up in October, as well as other larger events associated with Tahi Rua Toru Tech and other expansions in our event offerings we've created a new Conference and Events Coordinator role, focused on running our larger events and event programmes. We're very pleased that Christan Pianta from our existing team has accepted this role. Congrats Christan!

And last but certainly not least, we're excited to have appointed Jess Malaulau as an Administrative Assistant (primarily undertaking Christan's previous role). Jess comes with great experience, most recently completing 5 years in administrative roles at MSD. 

We hope you'll join us in welcoming Tracey and Jess when they start later in the month and congratulating Christan on his new role.

 

(External) Board and Advisory roles available 

Since its inception in 1989, Community Living Trust has persistently sought innovative and diverse ways to respond to the individual needs of people with intellectual disabilities (including people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, multiple disabilities, high and complex behaviours and offending histories) within their communities in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and greater Midland region. 

Platform Plus is a social enterprise wholly owned by the Trust, providing digital transformation and associated transactional services to small and medium sized organisations - mainly within the health and disability industry. Sitting within PPL are three Stratus Cloud entities which were established to provide Cloud services such as computer memory, storage, security, resilience and continuity at affordable prices for customers and IT professionals - while providing funding for the Trust.

The Trust is currently recruiting for vacancies on their Board, as well as an independent Chairperson for the Platform Plus Advisory Group. Both roles are remunerated. We recommend holding CITPNZ for the Chairperson of the Advisory Board role.
