Here's a quick weekly update from ITP CEO Paul Matthews

This week, let's take a look at ITP's certification offerings: Chartered IT Professional NZ (CITPNZ) and Certified Technologist (CTech). Also, a big welcome to our newest ITP Corporate Partners and a brief update on the Workforce Development Council issue we outlined last week.

Is 2020 the year you become a Chartered IT Professional?

No doubt you're aware that ITPNZ offers the globally recognised Chartered IT Professional NZ (CITPNZ) and Certified Technologist (CTech) certifications. Or maybe you're not. But either way, what are they and why does it matter?

In a word, it comes down to trust.

CITPNZ and CTech are professional certifications as opposed to technical certifications. This means that rather than assessing whether you can do specific tasks with specific technologies, they independently confirm that you:

1. Know what you're doing (in your chosen area)
2. Keep up to date in your field
3. Are trustworthy
4. Are bound by a Code of Ethics, and
5. Can demonstrate actual results

In short, you're someone that the professional body of the sector has independently assessed and can endorse as a bona fide professional. It's not a guarantee that you'll always get it right; but it is a commitment that if you breach your ethical responsibilities, the professional community can hold you to account.

And that's where trust comes in.

Now more than ever before, trust is important for our careers, businesses and clients. Rather than just taking your word for it, professional certification means you've been fully assessed, independently, and really do know your stuff. It also means that you've committed to a Code of Ethics and are accountable.

So which is right for you?

 

Certified Technologist (CTech) is for those who are fully responsible for their own work.

If you're a CTech, you work under general direction but use discretion in identifying and resolving complex problems and assignments. Importantly, you take a methodical approach to problem solving and communicate effectively. And you are mindful of ethics and your professional responsibilities.

Chartered IT Professional NZ (CITPNZ) is for those who are fully responsible for project, organisational or team outcomes.

If you're a Chartered IT Professional, you're able to use your leadership to achieve successful outcomes for your business or client. Your work is often self-initiated, you're responsible for meeting agreed outcomes and where appropriate, have a significant role in delegating responsibilities. And you are mindful of ethics and your professional responsibilities.

WDC Coverage

Just a quick update on the unacceptable Workforce Development Council (WDC) situation, as part of the RoVE review, outlined to our community last week.

Firstly, thanks to all of those who emailed or spoke to me over the last week conveying your support for the position we've taken on this - we do really appreciate it and while we'll be consulting further with the membership as a whole, it's great to know we have wide support from our industry.

This week we met with senior officials from TEC to discuss the issue and convey our concerns about their proposed WDC structure. It was a somewhat productive meeting and we're working on an alternative that we think will work for them while also being far more favourable to our (and other) industries.

Interestingly, we're not alone in finding their proposed WDC structure unworkable. We've also been in discussion this week with a number of other industries in the same boat - they also can't believe the structure that has been proposed and are looking for changes.

We truly believe TEC and others are trying to find the best solution and, as we do in a range of other areas and with other government agencies, will work collaboratively and constructively with them as much as possible to find an outcome more compatible with our industry. If it does have to move to a public campaign, I suspect this will be as part of a coalition of industries that is currently developing.

We'll also continue to keep you informed as things progress.
