Datacom Group has acquired Origen Technology for an un-named price and says it plans to use its trans-Tasman clout to push the company's Ozone software into Australia.

Origen Technology is the Tauranga-based developer of Ozone - a local government software package used by one in five New Zealand councils. Datacom also has significant business with local councils: almost three quarters of council use the company's software or services.

Datacom Solutions managing director Jonathan Usher says there's a huge opportunity for the new owners to sell Ozone in Australia and possibly beyond. He says there's an emerging opportunity in the market with Australian local government heading into a round of amalgamations which means discontinuity.

Usher also said Ozone plays to Datacom's strengths on both sides of the Tasman where it plans to offer the software along with cloud-computing services and business process outsourcing.

Previously Ozone has failed to win significant business in Australia, but has been shortlisted in a number of tenders. Usher says Datacom's brand and reputation will help open doors.

The acquisition will see Datacom swallow the Origen name, but keep the Ozone brand. The business unit and its 15 staff will remain in Tauranga and Ozone development will also stay in the Bay of Plenty.

Although Datacom is New Zealand owned and has its headquarters in Auckland, the company's centre of gravity has shifted west in the past decade following ac quisitions in Australia. Today a sizeable share of its revenue comes from across the Tasman and about a quarter of its total workforce is in Australia.
