ITP Mourns the passing of past President Richard Donaldson

Standing on the shoulders of giants - ITP Mourns the passing of past President Richard Donaldson
Sadly Richard passed away last weekend. Richard was the president of the New Zealand Computer Society (ITP's former name) from 2005-2007.

I was lucky enough to work with Richard at Transpower throughout the 1990's and 2000's. He was one of the giants in my early career uniquely (at the time) straddling the Engineering world with the Digital Technology world. Richard was a pioneer and advocate for the importance of digitisation and automation of Engineering functions.

I fondly remember Richard and our colleague Robert who were running the Y2K project for Transpower, flying around the country in a helicopter to reach every single substation in the country assessing firmware and other components as to whether they needed Y2K updates - preventing the risk of massive power outages for the nation.
Richard came back with great stories, detailed descriptions of the substations houses  they stayed in (and their condition) and photos of the views of parts of the country most of us would never have an opportunity to see.

Richard was incredibly proud of the Grid Heritage project, and preservation of historic National Grid assets. He would stop by my desk on a regular basis to provide updates on how the project was progressing - again with a story to be told and always with a huge smile on his face.  https://www.gridheritage.org.nz/

The current ITP President and the board are all very saddened by the loss of Richard. His contribution to our organisation and his civic mindedness volunteering his time and energy to furthering the profession of information technology was endless.

Richard's funeral information, and a tribute page you can leave your own tribute, can be found here. https://www.tributes.co.nz/ViewMyTribute.aspx?id=17288
