Curran removed from Cabinet
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says "She has failed my expectations. This is a significant demotion," as Curran offered her resignation as Minister for Open Government and Government Digital Services. She retains her ACC and broadcasting roles but is now a minister outside cabinet.
Curran's meeting was with tech entrepreneur Derek Handley in relation to her search for a government-wide CTO, however she did not record the meeting in her diary, nor were her staff or any officials made aware of it and the meeting was left out of an answer to a parliamentary question for written answer.
This was the second meeting Curran failed to disclose fully. The first meeting, with Radio New Zealand journalist Carol Hirschfeld was also not recorded properly and Hirschfeld lost her job having misled her CEO and Chair who were forced to restate an answer to a Parliamentary question.
Chris Hipkins, currently Minister of Education, will take on responsibility for open government and for finding the country's CTO.
