Arise, knights of the tech sector
Long weekends are always welcome (ED: unless you're a journalist on deadline of course) and none more so than Queen's Birthday Weekend where we can sit in traffic and ponder the meaning of life and also celebrate those who make it to the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
While many notables have been included over the years, the tech sector generally doesn't get much of a look in. That's not unexpected as the sector is still very much in growth phase in New Zealand and much of our landscape is dominated by international providers rather than home grown.
This year's awards are no different. Only two gongs were handed out "for services to technology", both going to women.
Rhonda Violet Marion Hyde (better known as Rhonda Kite) was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to media, technology, television and film, and Faye Sumner, CEO of the Medical Technical Association (MTANZ) was made a Companion of the New Zealand order of Merit for her contributions to the medtech area.
Perhaps it's time for our lobby groups to step up submissions for the New Year's Honours and see if we can't get a few more worthies added to the list. Recognition of the individual will help raise the profile and mana of the industry, which still suffers somewhat in the public's eye.
