NetHui 2017 kicks off next week

Paul Brislen, Editor. 30 October 2017, 7:11 am

InternetNZ's NetHui is on and, after a year spent touring the regions, it's back in Auckland, at Aotea Square.

This year's theme is "Trust and Freedom" and InternetNZ has lined up some major speakers to discuss the issues at hand.

This year's line-up includes keynote speeches from Jillian York, Director for International Freedom of Expression at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, where she works on free expression, privacy, and digital security, and Pia Waugh, who is the Service Integration Lead for the Service Innovation Work Programme at The Department of Internal Affairs. Newly anointed Minister of IT and Communications (as well as broadcasting and digital government issues) Clare Curran will also give her first major address as Minister.

The advent of "fake news", of ongoing attempts to pervert the news cycle with propaganda of all sorts (including marketing materials) and the decline of traditional media sources means the impact of the internet has increased exponentially over the past few years.

There are, as ever, plenty of topics up for discussion and with a new government in place it's high time we figure out what the key issues are for our civil masters to consider. Copyright is up for review, we have new security service considerations to review, not to mention the ever popular "should we allow our fridges and garage door openers  onto the internet" debate.

Tickets are on sale now.
