Wellington smarts - but gets over it quickly

Paul Brislen, Editor. 19 April 2017, 6:00 am

Hot on the heels of the ignominy of having the New York Times use photos of Auckland to illustrate how cool the capital is, Wellington now appears to have abandoned New Zealand entirely to join the Australian Smart Communities Association (ASCA) as the first non-Aussie city to do so.

While the Americans still think our primary exports are "concentrated milk and the meat from sheep and goats", the Aussies clearly have a nose for the high-tech as ASCA president, Michael Whereat, says.

"Wellington has a remarkable program of smart city initiatives and innovations - from smart parking, disaster management and recovery, to city analytics - which will add another valuable layer to the ASCA network."

ASCA claims to be "the peak industry association in Australia for the rapidly developing digital, sharing and interconnected communities," and boasts 150 local government authority members and which hopes to share learnings among community members as they work to develop smarter solutions for residents of major conurbations.

No word yet on whether Wellington can help our US brethren improve on their "smartness" metric or not.
