Wellington? What a capital idea

Paul Brislen, Editor. 08 March 2017, 7:00 am

Wellington, the windy city. Wellywood. The greatest little capital in the world. It's not really practical but then again, apparently it is.

Wellington is wooing tech staff from across the world in a competition to get more IT professionals to come to New Zealand and it's working remarkably well.

The LookSee campaign offers those who get through the vetting system a chance to come to New Zealand for free for job interviews and a holiday and after the idea was picked up by several international publications, more than 11,000 applied on the first day.

Wellington is home to a number of tech companies and, despite one wag's suggestion that the city is "dying", seems to attract those internationals looking as much for lifestyle opportunity as they are work opportunity.

It's certainly a novel approach to the skills shortage and with taxpayers footing a large percentage of the bill it's sure to be closely watched in political circles.

But with the US clamping down on H1B visas, and shooting at those who do get them, tech migrants are being encouraged to consider other locations around the world.

This is a golden opportunity for New Zealand to offer both safety, work, a lifestyle and of course a challenge, and it's a good time for us to step up the marketing campaign.
